Morning and evening people

  • Morning and evening people

Whether you are at your best early or late, there is little you can do about it. It is in your DNA.

    Larks and owls

Scientists speak of larks and owls. Your genes determine your melatonin and cortisol production and the moment your body temperature begins to fall. Dr Simon Archer of the University of Surrey discovered that the gene Period-3 steers your biological clock: a long version makes you a morning person, a short version an evening person.

    Social jetlag

Evening people generally sleep less and suffer more often from insomnia. Society is built around the rhythm of morning people. Whoever falls asleep late but must rise early experiences social jetlag. A state that builds over the weeks and translates into fatigue, irritability, reduced concentration.

    What each type brings

Morning people are more precise and proactive. Evening people are generally more creative and intelligent. Whatever type you are: play to your strengths.
