Sleeping poorly the first night in a strange bed is normal. Researcher Yuka Sasaki of Brown University proved it: in everyone, one half of the brain stays alert the first night. Deep sleep is less deep. The body is watchful. Four tips to make it better.
Bring something familiar
Bring something familiar, your own pillow, pillowcase or blanket. It helps. The body recognises what it knows.
The air conditioning off
Turn off the air conditioning. The noise and the unnatural cool disturb sleep.
Move every day
Whoever is active, on holiday too, falls asleep more easily.
Protection
Protect yourself against insects. In warm or humid climates mosquitoes are a real problem. A good spray with DEET does its work.
