A duvet in the washing machine

A duvet in the washing machine, it can sometimes be done. But it is not the same as a professional cleaning at Fja-Oeyen. That deserves some honesty.

Read the care label first

Always check the label. Some duvets are not suitable for the machine. Then the casing and filling are not built to handle the movement and temperature.

What the machine does and does not do

A home machine mostly cleans the outside. The down itself is at most freshened. Use a delicate programme, no fabric softener, no bleach and no dry cleaning.

Drying asks attention

Drying is often harder than washing. The down must be fully dry, otherwise moisture stays behind and odour or mould can arise. Low temperature and regular shaking are needed.

Our method

In the atelier we wash filling and casing separately. That is different care than a home machine can give. So we give no warranty on duvets washed wrongly elsewhere.

Why home washing is fragile

A home machine has little room. A large duvet is compressed, and that makes rinsing and drying hard. The risk lies not only in washing, but mainly in moisture left behind.

When caution is needed

If you doubt, rather stop before you start. Check the label, the size of the machine and the drying time. A duvet that is not fully dry can suffer more damage than one that waits a little for the right treatment.
