Seven habits for bed linen

Bed linen lies close to your skin every night. That deserves some attention. Seven small habits often decide how long it stays beautiful, fresh and pleasant.

1. Read the care label

Every fabric has its own limits. The label honestly tells what the textile asks for.

2. Do not use too much soap

A small dose is often enough. The excess soap that stays behind in the textile is not pleasant. The water and the machine do most of the work.

3. No fabric softener

Fabric softener reduces the moisture-absorbing capacity. Bed linen that no longer takes up moisture feels clammy more quickly.

4. Wash weekly

Wash preferably weekly, inside out, and do not overfill the machine. Bed linen needs room to become clean.

5. Dry with air

Drying outside remains ideal. If that is not possible, hang it indoors by an open window. It takes longer, but the textile is the better for it. A tumble dryer is possible in principle, but mind the temperature.

6. Iron lightly damp

If you iron, do it best when the bed linen is still slightly damp. The result is crisper and asks less effort.

7. Store breathable

No plastic, no vacuum. Natural fibres want to breathe, also in the cupboard. A lavender sachet or cedarwood is often added for the scent.

Why these habits work

Bed linen wears not only by use and the movement of washing, but also by what stays behind: soap residue and moisture. Small care keeps the fibre suppler and the fabric more pleasant. You do not feel it on one day, but you do after many washes.

No excess

Good care is usually sober. Not too much detergent, not too much heat, not too much pressure. Textile stays nicer when it becomes clean without violence. That is an old rule, but still a reliable one.
